If you do happen to chance upon something that your beloved will like, purchase it immediately for him or her. There is no need for a special occasion to arrive in order for you to show your appreciation to your beloved with a gift.

Focus not on the issues that are causing arguments and fights between the both of you, and seek to give gratitude and appreciation at each other. This is absolutely important, and unless grave problems have cropped up, do not expose each other’s weaknesses and mistakes to each other.

When we express love willingly without any demands to each other, your beloved will notice the change in behavior in you, and when you both confront issues together, you will find that these issues seem lighter than it formally was. This is going to sound totally illogical at first, but stop and consider whether the way to ultimately save your marriage is to just stop talking to one another as often. Most assume that they need to talk as often as possible if they want to work things out, but the way they end up talking can lead to more harm than good.

In most cases, a couple going through a stormy period of marriage will end up sitting with a couple’s therapist in attempt to work out the problems. At first it is often tense and having to sit there and listen to the other person’s gripes and grumbles is very aggravating. Yet in the end, some will be able to find common ground and come out okay. Others will turn their sessions into shouting matches that eventually lead to a divorce.

So, what makes the difference here between couples that can essentially talk out their problems and others that cannot?

If you think it’s the skill of the therapist that makes the difference, you are wrong. It’s the listening skills of the couple that make the difference here. Truthfully, it is not the talking that fixes the problems! Couples that use talk therapy successfully are the ones that truly listen to one another and then take action every single day afterward to make things better.

Talk alone will never work. While therapists can be extremely beneficial, it all comes down to how receptive both parties are to the sessions. If you both sit there holding your breath in anger waiting for your turn to list all the flaws of your partner, then you are not really listening to one another and nothing will be solved.

It’s what you do when you leave the therapist’s office that really counts. If you leave fuming mad and go have a screaming match or completely shut one another out and not talk at all until the next session, chances are very low you will ever work things out.

The recipe for success is a short period of open, honest, attack-free discussion where both people are allowed to state the issues as they see it without worry of attack or revenge. If you really listen to one another and then take deliberate action to start fixing the issues, you may really be able to save the relationship.

Instead of storming out of such a session with anger, you should storm out thinking of ways to make things better. Then take action! It’s what you ultimately do, not say, that is going to eventually save your marriage or allow it to self-destruct and erode even further.
